In sintesi

A stormy period is slowly ending, leaving behind fresh slabs that a rider can trigger in wind-loaded terrain. Expect these slabs to be larger and more dangerous as you move higher in elevation or closer to the Cascade Crest. Pay attention to blowing snow and avoid steep, open slopes that appear freshly textured and wind-loaded.

    Wind slabs will vary in size and depth based on your elevation and position in the zone. But in general, expect these slabs to become thicker, denser, and more consequential as you climb above 5500 ft or in areas closer to Chinook and White Pass.  Sunday evening and Monday morning will feature strong westerly winds, so you may find these slabs further down slope than usual. Use visual clues like blowing snow and look for textured, rippled surfaces as ways to help you identify wind loaded features. Strong winds will keep these slabs reactive, so avoid slopes that appear freshly loaded. These avalanches could be large if triggered.

This recent storm track has favored the southern Washington Cascades and volcanos. The East South snotel sites did pretty well and picked up 6-8 inches of new snow on Sunday, with the most recorded near Bumping Lake and Chinook Pass. 

The storm train appears to be tapering these next days as a transient high-pressure ridge takes grip over the region. This should allow for some drying ahead of more weather that arrives later this week. We have plenty of dry snow available for wind transport, so be sure to focus your attention to wind-loaded terrain in the coming days.

Outside of a few observations reporting shallow wind slabs in neighboring zones, observations have been sparse. All of this recent snow rests over a prominent crust that we have labeled as the 'Solstice Crust'. Right now,  we don't really know too much about how the new snow is bonding to this crust, but it will be worth tracking, especially as nicer weather allows us to push into higher terrain. Ease into terrain slowly and carefully evaluate the recent storm snow layers and the bond to this prominent crust 2-3 ft below the snow surface.
