In sintesi

Small loose wet avalanches are possible on very steep sunny slopes Friday.  You may trigger small wind slabs below ridgelines where you find denser wind affected snow bonded poorly to the underlying crust.

Small loose wet avalanches, natural or human triggered, will become more likely on very steep sunny slopes as the sun rises and temperatures climb Friday.  Loose wet avalanches can be dangerous in isolated areas if they push you into terrain traps such as trees, rocks, or gullies.  If you see rollerballs, pinwheels or natural wet loose avalanches, consider avoiding nearby steep slopes.  While small, they may run further than expected where they overlie a smooth crust.

Example of natural small loose wet avalanches on very steep slopes above the Hurricane Ridge road cut.

Avalanche Discussion

Several inches of dry and fluffy snow accumulated during the week at Hurricane Ridge with light to moderate periods of northerly winds.  NPS Rangers observed that winds had drifted the recent snow into soft and shallow slabs. It's possible you could trigger a small wind slab below ridgelines, especially where it's bonded poorly to the crust below.

While the recent snow since last weekend has refreshed surfaces,  travel hazards are still present due to the below normal snowpack.  Unusually dry and warm conditions in January and the first half of February exposed bare ground on many W and S aspects. Photos from these outings remain in the media gallery to remind you of the landscape prior to the snowfall and how the new snow may just be enough to mask shallowly submerging rocks or stumps - or magnify the risk of a small avalanche. Also, take your time navigating shallow snowpack areas or creeks in the valley bottoms.

2021-22 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.
