Your risk of triggering an avalanche will increase throughout the day on Thursday as winds and temperatures increase. If the storm delivers significant snow transport, steer around steep wind-loaded start zones. Lower on the mountain, evaluate micro terrain features for storm slab reactivity before committing to steeper open slopes.

    You can trigger a slab large enough to injure or kill you on Thursday. Conditions may border on dangerous with a storm bringing another 6" of snow and moderate to strong winds creating deeper wind-loaded pockets. Strong to extreme winds heavily wind affected the 13" of snow that sits generally right side up and well-bonded to the 12/27 refreezing crust. Mt. Hood Meadows Pro Patrol was able to pull out an isolated large avalanche 2 ft deep with explosives on Wednesday. However, we expect most avalanche activity to occur as denser slabs build above the recent dry snow layers. As you head into more wind-affected terrain, check for firm, punchy layering or hollow-sounding snow.  Cracking under your mode of travel will also help you identify a wind slab. The farther the crack propagates, the more reactive the slab will be. Use visual cues such as identifying blowing snow deposition zones and pillow-like drifts to locate the problem. When in doubt, stick windward aspects or slopes less than 35 degrees.

    Cornices have grown large and more reactive in recent days. Give them a wider birth near ridgelines and also steer clear of them on ascent routes. The softer, sharper portion will also cue you in to wind deposits on the slopes below.

    Storm layers may be more reactive on Thursday. Slabs could be 1-1.5 ft deep on Thursday with most releasing on mid-storm interfaces. Stomp on small sample slopes whenever available to evaluate the problem. Watch for warming temperatures late in the day that could make storm slabs easier to trigger. Steer around steep or unsupported slopes, particularly if you find evidence of reactive storm snow layers.

Avalanche Discussion

Although snowfall should peak Thursday morning, expect wind transport to increase into the afternoon hours. During and after periods of heavily accumulating or transporting snow, expect more sensitive slabs. As the storm ramps up, your terrain selection narrows to lower-angle, simpler terrain to mitigate the increasing hazard.
