Avalanche Summary

A Special Avalanche Advisory for much of Colorado. Heavy snow and strong winds dramatically changed avalanche conditions. You can easily trigger large, deadly avalanches throughout President’s Day weekend.

The most dangerous slopes are near and above treeline and face northwest to north through southeast. Westerly wind continues drifting snow, building slabs, and stiffening slopes, making it easier for you to trigger avalanches. We could even see some natural avalanche activity with continued loading on Monday.

Approach steep slopes carefully and know what slopes surround you, as avalanches may break broader and deeper than expected. Cracking, collapsing, and recent avalanche activity all point to stepping back and sticking to slopes less than 30 degrees in steepness.
