In sintesi

The snowpack structure is poor and large unstable slabs lie upon a persistent weak layer of faceted snow. Yesterday a snowmobiler near Togwotee Pass remotely triggered a slab avalanche and was nearly buried. Similar events are possible today within the Teton Range forecast area.

    Large persistent slabs could be human triggered on a variety of aspects. At the mid and upper elevations these slabs could have crown depths of three to five feet. At the lower elevations these slabs could have crown depths up to 30 inches deep. These slabs have been triggered in areas where thick deposits of wind-drifted snow exist in avalanche starting zones. Shallow, weak spots in these slabs, on steep rocky slopes should also be considered likely trigger points. Previous tracks on a slope should not be mistaken as an indication of stability.

Avalanche Discussion

Snowfall will diminish by Thursday morning and cloud cover will begin to dissipate. Overnight lows in the mountains will be near 10 before rising into the low 20s during the day. Northeasterly ridgetop winds will range from 10 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be CONSIDERABLE in the Greys River and Togwotee Pass areas on Thursday. Backcountry travelers are likely to trigger dense slabs two to five feet in depth on a variety of aspects. In the Tetons, the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE. Similar slides are possible and could be triggered in isolated areas. In all forecast areas, the consequences of being caught in one of these slides remain high and previous tracks are not an indication of stability.
