Steep wind-drifted slopes are the most likely places to trigger an avalanche. Use visual clues, such as cornices or smooth, rounded drifts below a ridge, to identify areas to avoid. You can also feel the change to stiffer, brittle snow, and it may even crack as you move into drifted areas. Slides could be larger and run farther than you initially expect. Your safer travel options are low-angle or wind-sheltered terrain.
