Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised areas of windslab will continue to develop overnight and into the morning with an enhanced period of instability during the afternoon as the freezing level rises. Steep wind sheltered areas such as gullies and coire rims on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres will be most affected. Remaining cornices will be prone to collapse. Elsewhere there will be a shallow covering of soft stable snow. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Further snow showers will be occasionally heavy into the evening and overnight, turning lighter and fewer from late morning. Snow will fall initially above around 400 metres then gradually turn to rain as the freezing level rises above the summits by the end of the day. Very strong to gale force South-Westerly winds. Observed Weather Influences: Showery precipitation was occasionally heavy, falling as rain for a time to the higher summits during the morning then turning to snow and hail above 500 metres. Fresh South-Westerly winds. The freezing level was around 600 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of moderately bonded windslab are present in some steep wind sheltered locations. North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres are most affected. Elsewhere there is a thin covering of stable snow. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
