Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Windslab will continue to develop through the period. Significant areas of unstable windslab will be present mainly on North-West through North to South-East aspects above 700 metres. There will be a period of reduced stability around dawn when avalanches are likely. Cornices will be fragile and prone to collapse. Windward aspects will generally be scoured and icy with good stability. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Southerly winds will increase to gale force for a time overnight before easing slightly and veering to the South-West during the day. Showers will mostly fall as snow above 500 metres but with rain up to 900 metres for a time around dawn. The freezing level will mostly be around 500 metres rising to 1050 metres for a time around dawn. Observed Weather Influences: There were snow showers and bright periods with a fresh West-South-Westerly wind. The freezing level was around 700 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of poorly bonded windslab are present in wind sheltered locations with deepest accumulations on North through East to South-East aspects above 700 metres. Fragile cornices are present above these aspects. Windward aspects are generally scoured, icy and stable. Evidence of a recent slab avalanche noted on an East aspect at 1200 metres. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
