Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: The strong winds will redistribute existing snow deposits throughout the day. New moderately to weakly bonded windslab will develop on West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. Gully tops, scarp slopes and corrie rims will be worst affected. Instabilities will also be encountered at lower levels in steep sheltered terrain. The majority of the snowpack will be very firm and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Remaining cold with the freezing level sub 500 metres throughout. A cloudy day with only a few snow showers expected. Winds, gale to strong gale force throughout the day from the South-South-East. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight, there was snowfall to the glens but the day was dry and sunny. Cold throughout, around -7 with a high wind chill. Winds were storm force overnight but easing during the day. ObservedSnowStability: Moderately to weakly bonded windslab is present in wind sheltered locations on North-East through South-East to South-West aspects above 900 metres Corrie rims, gully tops and steep convex slopes are most affected. Moderately bonded windslab is present below this altitude but the majority of the snowpack is firm and icy. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
