Snowpack Structure

Above approximately 700 m snow will fall. In particular low and intermediate altitudes, steep sunny slopes: The new snow is lying on top of a quite favourable old snowpack. High altitudes and the high Alpine regions: In some cases new snow is lying on the soft surface of an old snowpack. In particular at elevated altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Avalanche Activity

Slab avalanches and dry loose snow avalanches are the main danger.

As a consequence of a moderate to strong wind, sometimes deep wind slabs formed on Wednesday adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. 10 to 15 cm of snow will fall above approximately 1500 m. The avalanche prone locations are covered with new snow and are difficult to recognise. The fresh and older wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases on steep shady slopes above approximately 2000 m. This applies in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example.
