Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs at high altitude. Dry slab avalanches are the main danger.

The wind will be moderate to strong. Adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls the wind slabs will increase in size moderately. The fresh snow as well as the sometimes large wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant at intermediate and high altitudes. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in steep terrain at high altitude and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack.

Snowpack Structure

The fresh wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The new snow of the last few days is lying on a crust on wind-protected shady slopes above approximately 2300 m.
