Avalanche Activity

GC 28/12 Windslab on W,NW,N,NE and E aspects above 800m. Cornices weak and fragile on same aspects. Av haz Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Overnight, poorly bonded windslab will continue to develop affecting mostly steep locations, on North-West to North-East aspects above 800 metres. Gully tops, flanks and steep coire headwalls especially affected. Partial consolidation of the snowpack is expected as milder conditions take affect during the day but deep instabilities may still persist. Cornices will be fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Freezing level hovering around the highest summits through the forecast period. Light snow showers above above 950 metres. Winds strong South-Westerly decreasing to South-Easterly then strengthening.

Observed Weather Influences: After a cold and dry night snow showers fell to lower levels through the morning, mainly above 100 metres, these became less persistent in the afternoon. The freezing level was around 200 metres with summit midday temperature at minus three degrees celsius. Winds were fresh to strong from a South-Easterly direction. ObservedSnowStability: Further accumulations of weakly bonded windslab continue to form in wind sheltered locations mainly on North-West to North-East aspects above 800 metres. Areas most affected with deep accumulations are sheltered gullies, gully flanks and steep coire rims. Fragile cornices exist above these aspects. All other slopes have a covering of fresh snow with localised instabilities on steeper slopes particularly West, East and South-East aspects. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
