Snowpack Structure

Snowpack

The new and drifting snow layers of the last few days are in some cases still prone to triggering. On the northern Alpine ridge, in Valais, in the Gotthard region, in northern and central Grisons and in Engadine, there are weak layers in the snowpack below December’s fresh snow. These are mostly located near melt-freeze crusts, especially on north- and east-facing slopes. Avalanches may be triggered in these weak layers.

In the north, some local snowfall is still possible into the morning. Otherwise, it will be mostly sunny in the mountains and in the south, with isolated patches of cloud.

  • mostly weak from the southeast
  • moderate Bise wind in the Jura and along the Prealps

Weather review for Monday, 09.12.2024

Some snow fell in the north overnight and it was very cloudy during the day. There were some clear spells in Valais and Engadine in the afternoon.

Fresh snow

The snowfall level was at low altitude. Snowfall from Sunday to Monday afternoon was as follows:

  • central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps, and in some parts of central Grisons: 5 to 15 cm
  • otherwise less, dry in the far west and on the southern flank of the Alps

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between -5 °C in the north and -2 °C in the south.

Wind

  • moderate, sometimes strong northeasterly wind on the northern Alpine ridge and on the central part of the main Alpine ridge, easing as the day progresses
  • moderate to strong Bise wind in the Jura and along the Prealps

Tendency

Outlook

It will be mostly sunny in the mountains on Wednesday and Thursday. The wind will be light and the zero-degree level will be at 1500 m.

Avalanche danger will decrease.
