Snowpack

The snowpack has become soaked up to over 3000 m on east-, south- and west-facing slopes and up to around 2200 m on north-facing slopes. Owing to the progressive moistening of the snowpack on north-facing slopes, wet slab avalanches are possible, especially between 2200 and 2600 m. Dry snow on the surface of the snowpack can now only be found on steep north-facing slopes above approximately 2800 m.

During Saturday night into Sunday, which will be clear, a melt-freeze crust mostly able to bear loads will form on the surface of the snowpack at high altitudes. This crust will soften rapidly on Sunday morning due to the mild temperatures and solar radiation.

Gliding avalanches, including large ones, are still possible. Although these will become more frequent as the day progresses, some may also be released during the night or in the early morning.

Sunday night into Monday will be widely overcast. During the day, it will often be cloudy with showers in the north. There will be some bright spells in the afternoon. The snowfall level will drop from 2600 to 2000 m. It will be partly sunny and dry in the south and in Grisons. There will be strong westerly winds in the north and generally at high altitudes.

The danger of dry avalanches may increase somewhat in the north. Due to the lack of outgoing longwave radiation during the night, there will already be an increased danger of wet and gliding avalanches in the early morning.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, there will be widespread precipitation in the north. The snowfall level will drop to around 1000 m. The most new snow is expected to fall on the Northern Alpine Ridge, with 10 to 15 cm of snow anticipated there. It will be dry and fairly sunny in the south.

In the north, the danger of dry avalanches will rise somewhat with the new snow, while it will not change significantly in the south. Due to falling temperatures, the danger of wet avalanches will decrease. Gliding avalanches will still be possible, though the associated activity is also easing.
