SC. 4.1.24 New unstable windslab developing on NE to SE aspects above 900 metres. Avalanche hazard moderate.
Forecast Snow Stability: Redistribution of existing soft unconsolidated deposits will lead to localised accumulations of shallow windslab forming mainly on North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Where accumulations achieve depth in wind sheltered locations and develop over older snow-ice, stability will be poor. Elsewhere, there will be a covering of soft powdery snow on many aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.
Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level will be around 500 metres during the day. Dry throughout this period. Winds backing overnight to South-West or West-South-West for most of the day. Fresh to strong throughout. Observed Weather Influences: The freezing level was around 500 metres for most of this period. Snow showers overnight falling on very strong North-North-Westerly winds. ObservedSnowStability: Snowfall with constant drifting has continued to develop localised unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations on East to South aspects above 900 metres. Elsewhere, deeper drifts are encountered in lee location with any exposed terrain scoured. Very icy underfoot. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
