In sintesi

While the avalanche danger is low, isolated pockets of complex terrain could hold unstable snow. A stiff windslab sits on top of faceted snow that is gaining strength, and while this structure is not ideal it is getting more difficult to cause snow to break.  Watch out for this snow in isolated terrain features.

    In isolated areas in and above the treeline, a wind slab sits on top of loose sugary facets. We have been slowly watching these snow grains gain strength.  In treeline terrain around Voodoo Bowl a thin rain crust was also present above the basal facets. Watch out for this crust, as its presence could cause propagation in the snowpack in steep, isolated, complex terrain.  Above 10,000 feet we have not found this crust, and breaks in the snow have been irregular and harder to trigger. We have limited information outside of the Sonora Pass area as there hasn't been enough snow south of Leavitt Lake to warrant a big trip into the high country to seek out the isolated slivers of snow in these areas. 

Avalanche Discussion

Little change to the snowpack as we pull into 2024, and we don't expect much change in the pack over the next few days. Trace amounts of snow have been swirling about, but not enough to build into sizeable slabs. The lack of snow is notable, as it is part of the recipe to drive a strong temperature gradient in the pack, keeping our persistent slab problem firmly planted in the forecast. Temperatures have been mild and the pack shows it, the facets at the bottom of the pack have been rounding out.  While we didn't receive the New Year's dump we were all hoping for, it is nice to see the weather on the horizon for this coming week. We could see a shot of snow on Wednesday and Thursday with around 12" forecasted up around the Sierra Crest.
