In sintesi

On Sunday in the Monument, wet snow avalanches will be increasingly likely on sun affected slopes as the day progresses and temperatures climb. These avalanches will mostly be small, but it is important to remember that small avalanches can still have high consequence. Monitor the upper snowpack throughout the day, and seek more shaded or low angle terrain if you notice slushy snow penetrating above your boot top.

    Saturday saw a temporary dip in temperatures, allowing the snow surface in the Monument to stay firm on more shaded aspects (NW - N - NE), and minimal wet loose activity on solar aspects where the snow surface had softened. On Sunday, temperature highs are forecasted to be about ten degrees warmer, leading to increased likelihood of this wet loose problem. We currently have a very saturated upper snowpack in the Newberry zone. Once the surface crust melts, expect to see wet, unconsolidated snow in the upper snowpack wanting to slide on steep slopes. 

    Understanding wet loose avalanche problems is usually relatively manageable as long as you are constantly assessing the conditions of the upper snowpack. If you notice current natural wet loose activity or roller balling, understand these signs as indications of decreasing snow stability and therefore increasing likelihood to trigger a slide. Expect wet loose avalanches to be relatvely shallow and slow moving, but to carry substantial force. Stay vigilant of your surroundings, and remember that terrain traps such as cliffs, rocks, and trees on the slope below you will increase the consequence of a small slide.
