It will be possible to trigger avalanches in wind-blown snow on Sunday at higher elevations, such as in the alpine and below ridge tops. The winds will be shifting around and depositing snow on different aspects. Pay close attention to the depth of wind drifts before entering steep terrain.

    For the most part, wind slab avalanches will be unlikely on Sunday. However, there are pockets of unstable snow lingering at higher elevations. On Saturday, there was a report of a small skier-triggered wind slab avalanche on Pucker Up (steep, east-facing alpine terrain at Broken Top). 

    Sunday's weather forecast calls for a couple inches of snow and moderate winds out of the south. The wind slab problem will depend on whether the precipitation comes in as rain or snow. Up high, it will likely be snow, and this is where you will mostly likely find a wind slab problem. Note, winds will be shifting from the east overnight on Saturday to the south on Sunday, so the wind could be moving snow around onto multiple or unusual aspects. Test the depth of wind deposited snow from a safe location before committing to any steep, wind-loaded terrain on Sunday. When in doubt, you can always choose lower angle terrain.

There was a report of wet snow instability (indications of a wet slab) at the Santiam Pass on Saturday. On Sunday, the forecast for that area is calling for mixed snow and rain in the morning, and then rain in the afternoon. If you're at lower elevations where you're experiencing rain on snow and temperatures well above freezing, look for signs of wet avalanche problems. These can include roller balls, pinwheels, and slushy snow that you're sinking into up to your boot tops. If you observe these conditions, move to lower angle slopes.
