The mountains just received more blow than snow, but a few inches likely fell across all forecast zones. What we are more confident in is that strong winds have been blowing for over 24 hours and likely transported both new and old snow onto leeward-facing slopes. Where exactly the snow landed is a legitimate uncertainty and fresh drifts may be lurking in atypical spots - middle of a slope or even lower down. There’s also a decent chance the wind blew so hard the snow got sublimated back into the atmosphere or blown into Montana. Use textured surface clues and signs of unstable snow to steer you toward places with just a couple inches of soft, new snow versus spots with deeper, harder slabs only waiting for the extra push from a rider or machine.
These fresh slabs are now stacked above snowfall from last week that rest atop a hard, melt-freeze crust. Older drifted slabs were slightly more reactive in snowpack tests and from ski pressure where a thin layer of softer snow sat between denser snow above and the firm crust below. Snowfall Sunday night adds another layer to the mix and it’s worth digging down to determine depth of the uppermost crust and sensitivity of the snow above. This will provide insight to how big a slide you could trigger.
