In sintesi

Triggering a large avalanche that fails on weak layers buried 2-4 feet deep is possible in very steep terrain today. Wind-loaded slopes at upper elevations are the most dangerous. Signs of instability, such as cracking or collapsing, may not be present before triggering an avalanche. Careful terrain choices and thorough snowpack evaluation are recommended today.

    Weak layers of faceted snow that formed in November sit below recently formed slabs. These slabs are generally 2-4 feet thick and could have hard, slick surfaces from wind, rime and rain. This problem is confined to upper-elevation terrain and shaded aspects at the middle elevations. East through north-facing slopes held the most weak snow prior to the recent storms. While the likelihood of triggering is slowly decreasing, there is still a chance that you can trigger a large persistent slab avalanche in very steep (>35deg) upper-elevation terrain. Wind-loaded slopes will produce the largest and most destructive avalanches. Obvious signs of instability, such as cracking or collapsing, may not be present before an avalanche is triggered.

    Lingering wind slabs up to a foot thick may exist, built by strong westerly winds. These slabs will be difficult to trigger, but the chance remains in very steep, wind-loaded start zones. Surface slabs could step down into deeper weak layers, resulting in a large avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

The slab that was created by last week’s storm is gaining strength but still sits on top of weak facets and crusts above 8000’. Human-triggered avalanches are becoming less likely, and signs of instability have decreased over the past few days. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the lack of activity indicates a significant decrease in hazard. Weak layers are under significant stress right now, and a rider's weight may be just enough to tip the scales in very steep, upper elevation start zones. While the likelihood of triggering an avalanche continues to decrease, any resulting avalanche can still be large enough to bury you. Continue to give the snowpack time to adjust.  Careful terrain choices and a thorough assessment of snowpack structure are recommended.
