In sintesi

On Saturday, avalanches will be possible near and above treeline, primarily on east facing terrain where wind has deposited recent storm snow.  If you are skiing or riding at these higher elevations, use small or less steep slopes to evaluate the extent of wind drifted snow before committing to steep or unsupported terrain. If in doubt, seek windward slopes or low angle terrain.

We received about 7" of new low density storm snow in the last 24 hours, and this new snow came with moderate to strong winds that have fluctuated direction from SW, W, and NW over the last 24 hours.  I have added North and South facing terrain for this wind slab problem to allow ourselves some margin for the micro topography and terrain features that can create unusual loading patterns. This is especially pertinent because we are in the sweet spot for wind loading (25-35mph winds) and have this relatively light and dry new snow. With limited visibility above 7K on Friday, I could not actively observe blowing snow off of ridge tops, but I can assure you it was happening. If visibility does allow on Saturday, this is a great visual clue for where wind loading is actively occuring. Although most wind slabs will be on the shallower side, certain terrain characteristics can result in deeper drifts. It is important to remember that we are still in early season conditions with a relatively shallow (and highly varied) snow depth. Small slides could result in much higher consequence with the exposed rocks and logs that exist in a shallow snowpack.
