In sintesi

A hard refreeze, cool temperatures, and chilly north winds will limit surface warming. Prepare for a variety of firm surface conditions. Monitor sunny aspects for small, isolated wet snow instabilities.

Avalanche Discussion

After a solid overnight refreeze, temperatures have remained mostly below freezing for the past 24 hours. The March sun allowed for some softening of the snow surface yesterday on solar slopes sheltered from the cold north wind. No new wet snow instabilities were reported. Today will be rinse-and-repeat, though with a gradual warming trend.

Small instabilities will be confined to the steepest, sunniest, rockiest terrain features. Watch for small rollerballs or deep wet snow as signs that isolated wet loose avalanches are becoming possible.

Rising snow lines, emerging obstacles, and open water are hazards to manage at lower elevations. As you climb higher, hard, slick surfaces will be common across all aspects. Ski and boot crampons, and an ice axe, can help prevent a nasty slip-and-fall.
