The likelihood of triggering a wet avalanche is decreasing, but it's not necessarily impossible on steep, sun-exposed slopes where the snowpack feels wet and unsupportable. Monitor your boot penetration and be mindful of terrain features prone to warming, like rock outcrops and cliffs. Plan your day, so you have options to move to more shadier slopes if the snowpack feels wet and punchy.

    Natural wet loose activity has generally tapered off, and human-triggered activity has been limited to isolated steep, south-facing slopes at mid-elevations. A solid overnight refreeze should reduce this further, but don’t fully rule pushable wet loose on steep, sun-exposed terrain as warming progresses Sunday. Freezing levels are expected to rise to 8,000 ft, leading to sun-softened snow by late morning and afternoon. Monitor your boot penetration from slope to slope, and shift to a shadier aspect or gentler terrain if you sink past your boot tops in wet, mushy snow.

    Continue to exercise caution below sagging cornices and areas with isolated glide cracks, as daytime warming can weaken these hanging snow masses.

Avalanche Discussion

The danger has dropped, but that doesn’t mean triggering a wet loose avalanche will be out of the question on Sunday. It just means these areas of instability are considered more isolated to steep, sun-exposed slopes, particularly near rock or cliff bands.  Avalanche activity has been minimal and limited to D1s in recent days. On Saturday, avalanche professionals reported a small human-triggered wet-loose avalanche in Clark Canyon on a south-facing slope and noted that a previously supportable surface crust broke down to deep boot penetration at mid elevations as the afternoon warmed. While small D1-sized avalanches are often considered to be manageable, they may not be in extreme terrain or where terrain traps are present. Unfortunately, early-season hazards—open creeks, scattered rocks, and terrain depressions still plague the terrain around Hood and can amplify the consequences of a triggered wet slide.

Saturday night should offer a better refreeze and provide fast, firm travel during the morning hours. During these early hours of the day (or on shaded aspects), your main hazard will likely be long, sliding falls in steep terrain. Bring the proper mountaineering gear and be mindful of the consequences of slip and fall. 

While the south side should offer more softer surfaces as the day heats up, you may find more rugged conditions throughout the day on the north side of the mountain, where surfaces appear scoured, drifted, and runneled from recent rains on Saturday. I also spotted numerous large crowns that likely failed during last week's natural cycle. You will likely continue to find debris piles and old crowns from that impressively stormy week as you move around the mountain in the coming days.
