A strong refreeze of the snow surface is expected overnight.  Firm snow surface conditions this morning will soften as daytime warming occurs with partly cloudy skies becoming sunny with warm temperatures.  Avalanche danger is expected to increase tomorrow as a strong winter storm impacts our forecast region.

Normal caution

Mostly clear skies with well below freezing temperatures at most locations overnight is expected to provide a strong snow surface refreeze.  Firm snow surfaces this morning will soften as daytime warming occurs with sunny skies and warm temperatures forecasted.  This strong refreeze should extend supportable snow conditions at least through midday. Wet loose avalanches are unlikely today with the good overnight refreeze, slightly cooler temperatures, and established melt-water drainage through the snowpack.  

Monitor the snow surface throughout the day and wet snow development as you travel through the backcountry.  If the snow surface becomes deep and unsupportable, it's time to change aspects or move out of avalanche terrain.  

 

 

Recent Observations

  • Snowmelt continues on all aspects around the forecast area, especially below 7,000' to 7,500'. Many NW-N-NE-E aspects still have decent snow coverage. Large areas of bare ground or very limited snow cover exist on most SE-S-SW-W aspects.
