8-10 inches of snow fell over slick crusts and weak surfaces in East South, and you could still trigger avalanches in this new snow. If you see signs of instability, such as shooting cracks or new snow slides easily on small test slopes, you should stick to low angle slopes in wind-sheltered areas.

    Before Wednesday night's storm, various weak surfaces existed with faceted snow, surface hoar, and surface crusts at lower elevations and southern aspects. Observations from the nearby White Pass area showed that surface hoar was buried and preserved in some locations. These weak interfaces will take some time to heal, and triggering storm slabs will still be possible on Friday. Avalanches that fail on buried surface hoar could propagate widely. Be particularly cautious in exposed terrain where the wind has drifted snow deeper. Avalanches in these areas could be larger and more dangerous. As you travel, assess how the new snow bonds to the old snow surface. Use small test slopes and hand pits to gauge how easily the new snow slides. If small test slopes produce mini avalanches or new snow slides easily in quick hand pits, stick to lower angle terrain.

    Small test slopes like these are a great way to see how new snow bonds with underlying surfaces. If you see small avalanches like this, avoid steep slopes.

Warm temperatures and the potential for rain at lower-elevation trailheads may make small wet loose avalanches possible in steep terrain. Looks for signs, such as rollerballs or rain on dry snow, to indicate wet loose avalanches are possible. Avoid steep terrain where you find wet, heavy snow conditions. 

Last week, I traveled into the Ahtanum Meadows area and found approximately 7 inches of new snow over the Christmas Crust at lower elevations and nearly 2 ft at higher elevations. Overall, I found a favorable bond with this stout crust. However, in some locations in the eastern Cascades, this interface is beginning to weaken and will be something to monitor going forward.
