Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Human-triggered avalanches 2-4 feet deep are likely on steep, rocky, wind-loaded slopes at upper elevations. The avalanche danger could rise if snow starts to accumulate by this afternoon and winds increase. Ride low-angle sheltered terrain to reduce your risk.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 11 am Wednesday.

    The persistent slab problem exists at all elevations and on all aspects on Togwotee Pass. Multiple weak layers are buried throughout the snowpack and with an additional round of snowfall in the next 24 hours, these layers will be stressed further. You are most likely to trigger an avalanche at upper elevations in steep rocky terrain or other thin areas where there is wind-affected snow. Weak layers in the top 2 to 3 feet will be impacted first and the potential exists for avalanches to step down and collapse weak layers closer to the ground. Watch for collapsing and shooting cracks, sure signs of weak snow beneath you. Ride low angle slopes as the snowpack adjusts to the weight of new snow.

    New snow and wind will continue to build soft slabs up to 2 feet. The wind slab problem will increase later this afternoon as snowfall and wind pick up. Watch for stiff pillows, drifting and cracking in exposed terrain. This problem exists around ridges, cliffs and crossloaded features at all elevations. If you observe cracking or collapsing, seek out sheltered terrain. Small wind slabs can easily knock you off your feet in consequential terrain. Small avalanches can also step down and impact deeper weak layers and cause more destructive avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

Weather continues to increase the avalanche hazard. Snow from over the weekend caused a natural avalanche cycle and the snowpack remains stressed. Today, if snowfall rates and winds increase throughout the day, keep an eye out for changing conditions. Watch for obvious signs of instability including cracking, collapsing, avalanches and active loading/wind transport. If you see any of these signs, choose safer terrain and give yourself extra safety margin as you ride. Watch out for overhead hazard (avalanche slopes above you) and steer clear of terrain traps.
