Wind slabs will most likely be found at upper elevations in the Blues, where the greatest snowfall has occurred. If you observe drifting snow from the wind you can be assured new wind slabs are being formed. Dune-like formations, pillows, and fresh cornices are all visual clues. Look for small test slopes to observe signs of cracking as evidence that you should avoid steeper and more consequential terrain. Use extra caution around slopes leading into terrain traps, which could injure or bury a rider.
A stout crust developed earlier this week, which is a good sliding surface for the new snow. Freshly developed wind slabs will need time to bond to the old snow surface.
