Small wet loose avalanches might be triggered by backcountry travelers today following warm air temperatures and marginal snow surface refreeze conditions last night. Look for active rollerballs and pinwheels as an indicator of shallow surface instabilities. Exercise caution if choosing to travel in steep terrain where wet snow is present.

    It was warm again last night, but sufficient clearing of cloud cover occurred to allow for a weak overnight snow surface refreeze on open slopes. Snow surface refreeze in unlikely to have occurred on slopes under forest canopy. Expect to encounter a mix of melt freeze crust (potentially breakable) and surface wet snow on all aspects today. Additional amounts of surface wet snow development will likely occur on sun exposed slopes with wind protection. Strong SW winds are expected to keep problematic amounts of wet snow from forming on open wind exposed slopes.

    Use active roller balls and pinwheels as indications of potentially unstable surface wet snow development today. Any avalanches that occur today are expected to be small and shallow. The consequences could be magnified if you are pushed into down slope hazards such as rocks, trees, terrain traps, or over a cliff. Exercise caution if choosing to travel in steep terrain where signs of wet snow are present.

Avalanche Discussion

The recent persistent slab avalanche problem appears to have run its course. Avalanches occurred Feb 13-17. We have no reports of avalanches that occurred since Feb 17. The lack of recent avalanches combined with snowpit test results indicate that the weak layer of rounding facets located 2 to 4 feet below the snow surface is in either a dormant or unreactive state, depending on location. Any additional persistent slab avalanches are unlikely to occur at this time.
