In sintesi

We start to transition to a more active weather pattern with a small storm expected this afternoon and tonight.  Avalanche problems will remain unlikely today until we receive additional snow amounts.  Shallow early season conditions exist with firm and icy snow surfaces in most areas.

Normal caution

1 to 3 feet of snow exists at higher elevation terrain on northerly aspects above 8000-8500 feet.  This snow is left over from the late October and early November storms.  Over the past month of long nights, low sun angles, and clear conditions-this snow has faceted and grown weaker in many areas.  Variability exists though, with some locations showing a mid to upper snowpack that is made up of weak faceted snow and decomposing rain crusts and other areas having a more dense and well bonded snowpack.  During the last month of warm sunny days, most SE-S-SW-W aspects are completely void of all snow.  

The weather pattern will change today with a fast moving storm this afternoon and tonight.  2 to 4 inches of snow is expected at this point with blowing snow possible starting this afternoon.  In areas that receive the high end of snow totals, some small wind slabs could start to form overnight and into Tuesday where existing snow coverage exists.  With the forecasted snow totals and timing of the storm, wind slabs are expected to remain small and not be an issue for backcountry users today.  An active weather pattern is expected with additional storms this week into the following week that could increase the avalanche danger. 

Falling and sliding hazards continue as firm and icy snow surface conditions exist in most areas.  Specialized gear and skills made be needed to safely move through some snow covered terrain.

 

 

   

Recent Observations:

* 1 to 3 feet of snow exists on NW-N-NE aspects above about 8,000-8,500 ft. The snow surface remains highly variable with a mix of firm icy crusts and breakable crusts in most places. 

* Almost all SE-S-SW-W aspects are snow-free with continuous bare ground exposed.
