In sintesi

New snow and wind on Monday, will create the potential for Wind Slab avalanches on North and East slopes near treeline and in the alpine.  The size of these avalanches will relate directly to how much new snow we have received, so danger will rise throughout the day.  Snow on wind loaded slopes can by 3-5 times as deep as the new snow in meadows or glades.

    With snowfall totals on Sunday being a bit lower than forecast, our Wind Slab problem didn't really materialize.  It seems that most areas received 5-7 cm. on Sunday.  With more snow in the forecast for Monday it could be a much different day.  Hopefully more snow will lead to improved riding, but it will also create the possibility of more signifcant Wind Slabs.

    Most slopes (except shady alpine slopes) saw melt-freeze conditions prior to our most recent snowfall.  This supportable crust is a great landmark for ascertaining how much snow has fallen and how much may be blown into wind loaded start zones.  If the snow starts accumulating by the afternoon watch for the usual signs of a Wind Slab problem:  actively blowing snow, variable depth and textures on opposing aspects, and cracking or more cohesive snow on lee aspects.  I expect that Wind Slabs could be as large as D2 by late in the day.
