If you’re feeling hot and sticky from the sunshine, the snowpack probably is too. This could result in wet avalanches on steep sunny slopes. If these skies stay cloudy, you might not find much in the way of avalanche problems at all.

    Monday’s potential loose wet problem feels a bit like a pro/con list. On one hand, there’s plenty of cold snow, and upper elevation temperatures are warming significantly. On the other, it’s mid-winter, sun angles are low, and there could be a thin crust from Sunday’s sunshine. The tiebreaker will likely be the sky. Thin clouds may be just enough to keep the sun from working its magic. If skies clear, then wet snow could be an issue despite the date on the calendar. 

    Even though the forecast isn’t a slam dunk, it should be simple to monitor. If snow falls from trees/rock, the surface gets wet and sticky, or you notice new rollerballs, then wet avalanches are becoming a problem. Pay attention to what’s above you; natural slides could release from rocky terrain. You may also trigger an avalanche on similar steep sunny slopes. Fortunately, there’s plenty of fluffy snow in shaded areas to enjoy. 

    At lower elevations, colder temperatures, low clouds/fog, and long mid-winter mountain shadows should limit this problem.

Avalanche Discussion

Monday’s weather may vary significantly across the zone. Some places might see more sun, colder temperatures, thicker fog, or higher winds than others. Temperature inversions can vary one drainage to the next. Don’t get too locked into one objective and routinely make observations throughout the day. 

This last round of storms dropped another 6-14 inches of snow across most of the East Central zone. That brings the total depth over the 12/24 to around 12-24 inches. The few observations we have didn’t note many concerns within the recent snow. It’s been mostly right-side-up outside of wind affected terrain. If you go poking around in higher, rocky, complex slopes, you could find a lingering isolated wind slab. If this terrain is on the table, take a good look for wind affected snow before jumping in. 

Snowpack information is sparse. Beneath the 12/24 crust, there could be two other notable layers. The 12/18 crust likely exists up to near 6000ft in some areas. Lastly, there’s the basal atmospheric river crusts. Mission Ridge Ski Patrol found 1-3mm facets on this layer late last week. 

All the recent snow has done wonders for travel and coverage. Even still, it’s tough going at lower elevations. Downed trees, open creeks, and grabby bushes make getting to deeper snowpacks a challenge.
