In sintesi

Triggering a large avalanche that fails on weak layers buried 2-3 feet deep is possible in very steep terrain. Wind loaded slopes at the upper elevations are most dangerous. Signs of instability, such as cracking or collapsing, may not be present before triggering an avalanche. Careful terrain choices and thorough snowpack evaluation are recommended today.

    Weak layers of faceted snow that formed in November sit below recently formed slabs. These slabs are generally 2-3 feet thick.  While this problem is becoming less likely, very steep, wind loaded terrain that faces northwest through east remains the biggest concern. Shooting cracks and audible collapses are obvious signs of instability, but may not be present before triggering a large avalanche. Thin coverage remains at lower elevations on Togwotee, increasing the chances of hitting buried objects and injury.

    Lingering, isolated wind slabs may still exist above 10,000’.  These slabs will be stubborn and difficult to trigger, but the chance remains in very steep, wind loaded start zones. Triggering a surface slab could step down into deeper weak layers and result in a larger-than-expected avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

The avalanche danger is slowly decreasing on Togwotee. We are several days out from the last round of precipitation. Above average temperatures (40 degrees F at 9000’ yesterday) have helped decrease the likelihood of impacting weak layers. However, the weak layers from November were more widespread on Togwotee than the surrounding forecast areas and remain a concern. During peak warning hours this afternoon, there is a chance that slabs could soften enough to the point of increasing the likelihood of riders impacting weak layers beneath. There is some uncertainty here given the low angle of the December sun but given the forecasted temperatures, if you see surfaces moistening, seek out lower angle terrain. Continue to give the snowpack time to adjust to last week’s storm and choose terrain carefully. Dig down and evaluate the snowpack to find where these weak layers exist. The avalanche hazard will slowly decrease during the next few days without snow, but the adjustment process takes time.
