In sintesi

Many slopes have a LOW avalanche danger today.

A tricky MODERATE danger, however, exists on some steep west to south to east facing slopes where you can trigger a soft slab avalanche 1-2' deep. It is unlikely but not impossible to trigger one of these on the shady aspects, particularly wind loaded ones.

Use Normal Caution for wet loose sluffing on the steep solar aspects today.

Video below with Dr Terry O'Connor and Dr Brian Smith at the crown of Sunday's likely moose triggered avalanche in the Birthday Bowls near Cutler Ridge.

Weak faceted snow and a smattering of surface hoar exists roughly 1-2' down on many aspects and elevations. This layering is responsible for the Birthday Bowls avalanche (6800' East facing) and possibly the Chilly Peak slabs avalanche (6900' East facing) the day before. Wind has also been a significant factor in slides over the past week. This layering is sometimes associated with a crust and this crust has been a bed surface for avalanches in the central Wasatch and the Logan zone. It's worth keeping an eye on.

Bottom Line: Each of these avalanches were easily large enough to catch, carry, and bury a person and I tend to be more conservative when dealing with persistent weak layers.

Snow and Weather

Skies are clear.

Winds are light from the west-northwest. Anemometers along the southern Ogden skyline are spinning 25-20mph with gusts to 35.

Mountain temperatures are in the teens up high and down low with mid-elevation "thermal belt" temps in the 20s.

Despite a breakable sun crust on the solar aspects, riding conditions are excellent on the northerly slopes.

It's been a banner January with over 130" and 15" of snow-water-equivalent reported in the Ogden mountains.

Today, we'll see sunny skies, light west-northwest winds, and temperatures slowly rising to the the upper 20s up high, the mid-30s down low.

Outlook: A weak storm system does a drive by Friday. We'll see moderate to strong southwest winds but no precipitation for the trouble. Another stronger system arrives Sunday/Sunday night for another few inches of snow. The longer range outlook is neither blockbuster storm after blockbuster storm, ⛈ but it's not a high pressure ridge parked overhead, either.
