In sintesi

A storm is currently bringing heavy snowfall and strong westerly winds to the mountains across the forecast area. Dense slabs of snow will form on top of recently developed crust layers resulting in reactive conditions through Monday. Travel in or below steep and mountainous terrain is not recommended.

    During the past week the area experienced warm temperatures, and bouts of high elevation rain and sun. These weather factors have created crust layers near the surface of the snowpack which are now being buried. On Sunday a storm entered the area bringing heavy snowfall to elevations above 4,000' with strong winds. Heavy snowfall is forecast through Monday morning. Storm slabs will be easily triggered by humans on Monday with east and northerly aspects being the most dangerous locations as wind loading will create deeper slabs on those aspects. Human triggered avalanches are very likely in terrain steeper than 30 degrees.

Storm totals favored the forecast areas closer to Montana with the Selkirks missing out on the majority of the moisture from this last storm. Snow Water Equivalent totals from this last storm checked in at 1.9" at Bear Mountain, 2" at Hawkins Lake, 1.5" at Lookout Pass and Schweitzer coming in dead last with 0.6" as of Monday morning. While there is quite the range of totals in water across the mountain ranges we do know that the wind was cranking hard and transporting snow onto east and north aspects during the past 24 hrs. The new snow came in on the warm side meaning it will be slabby and dense. This will make for poor stability and easily triggered slabs on Monday, however, these warm and wet conditions will help the new snow settle and bond more quickly. 

Begining Tuesday night the area will see another significant weather system enter the area delivering more snow than this last system. Winds will are forecast to be lower with this next system but still strong enough to transport snow and build wind slabs.
