MODERATE Avalanche hazard exists above treeline for wind slabs on all aspects. Be on the lookout for deeper wind loaded pockets of snow in steep and complex alpine terrain. Small wet-loose sluffing should also remain a consideration on all aspects, primarily those receiving increased heating.

    Although wind slabs from this recent storm will be stabilizing and welding to old surfaces, there likely will still be some sensitive drifts and deposits found in complex alpine terrain on ALL ASPECTS today. Observations yesterday found deeper snow totals and more slabbed up conditions once you reached the 11,000ft elevation or so. Mammoth mountain ski patrol also reported soft sensitive wind slab adjacent to ridgelines that ran some distance when triggered. Identify recent cornice growth, fat looking pillows and ribbons of fresh snow and be aware of what is above you today. Take note if you’re starting to see shedding snow or roller balls that indicate the new snow is getting heated and loosened by sun or green-house effects. Areas adjacent to ridgeline, convex rolls, cliff bands and rock out croppings will be some of the prime terrain suspects to find deeper and potentially more hazardous wind slab.

    Increasing temperatures along with solar input and potential greenhouse effects will continue to loosen new deposits of snow on virtually all aspects and elevations. Steeper terrain receiving direct input from solar radiation, especially slopes above cliffs, or gullies and depressions would be best to avoid. Other terrain features such as tight confined couloirs that are receiving amplified heating effects will be particular terrain features to think about. Although new snow amounts were minimal, even a small slide from up high can gain significant volume as it travels down some of our bigger terrain. Winds from all directions during the recent storm loaded or cross-loaded all aspects and deposited more snow in the upper elevations, so keep that in mind as you travel higher into alpine objectives. Small natural activity was noted yesterday in the Sherwins  on northerly facing terrain at tree line, so consider the potential for loose wet sluffing not only on sunnier slopes, but on the shady aspects as well. Although cloudy condtions may cut the direct solar input today, they also may amplify greenhouse effects and increase heating of surfaces,  so remain observant of your local area of travel and pay attention for the signs of increased heating such as sticky conditions, roller balling or unsupportable snow condtions beneath your feet.

Spring time conditions and residual wind slab hazards in alpine terrain should be on the top of the list for riders this week. Getting an early start is paramount right now and paying particular attention to changing conditions associated with heating is key. Creek crossings, melting lakes, and terrain shedding rock and loose snow should be given a critical eye. Check for the supportability of snow by taking your ski off and stepping with your boot on to the surface, if you’re sinking well beyond boot top, this is a good indication to move to cooler shadier aspects, if possible, today.
