In sintesi

Triggering a slab avalanche in wind deposited snow will be possible near and above treeline on north, east, and south lee slopes. Triggering a slab avalanche in recent storm snow will be possible near and below treeline on all aspects. Ease into the terrain and evaluate slopes for windloading, and if you see signs of unstable snow such as cracking in the surface snow or previous avalanches increase your safety margin by moving to lower angle slope options less than 30 degrees steep.

    Existing wind slabs that have been around for a day or more will be trending to becoming less reactive but they are still out there and it is too early to write this problem off. The mountains gained 4 - 5" of snow in the afternoon and a few more inches are expected overnight. The wind will be backing off and new shallow wind slabs could continue to form into Saturday. In most areas triggering a wind slab will result in a small avalanche but isolated pockets of terrain could still go large. 

    As the storm tapers off and the sky lightens up, and you push into bigger terrain, evaluate wind loaded slopes carefully before commiting to consequential lines. Monitor the depth of wind loading by easing into low angle slopes before travelling on steeper wind loaded terrain. If you observe signs of unstable snow such as shooting cracks or previous avalanches, consider sticking to low angle options less than 30 degrees steep.

    Wind slabs typically form below ridge tops, high points, and around various terrain features that catch blowing snow.

    On Friday a heavy dense storm slab up to 30 cm (12") was found to be sitting on some lighter and weaker storm snow. Testing varied from stubborn to reactive. Two reports of storm slab avalanches were posted from the Todd Lake area, although its possible they reported the same avalanche. See picture for details. Snowfall is tapering off and we will not see much addition to the existing slab, but keep this problem in mind for another day especially if you are riding steep, rolling and unsupported terrain. Keep an eye on what is below you and be aware of terrain traps that can increase the consequence of even a small avalanche.

    Storm slab avalanche reported from 12/30 near Soda Peak. North aspect, below treeline, 35 degree slope. Reported as size D 1.5. Crown was 15 - 30 cm (6 - 12") and 200' wide There were ski tracks in the vacinity but trigger is unkown.

Avalanche Discussion

At least one storm slab avalanche was reported and there was a report of shooting cracks in wind affected snow in a clearing near treeline on a northeast aspect. Due to the weather and visibility, we have very little information about the wind slab problem in the upper elevations.
