Winter conditions exist in the mountains. In steep, wind loaded avalanche terrain at the upper elevations, skiers and riders could trigger small to large, recently developed wind slabs. Any extended periods of sunshine will increase the likelihood of triggering these slabs and also bring about the possibility of shallow point slides. Where the snowpack still exists at the lower elevations, cool temperatures and partial cloud cover should keep wet slides at bay. Monitor both warming temperatures and the impact of the sun, and be willing to alter your travel plans if conditions warrant.

    Measureable snowfall has occurred every day since last weekend, and the higher elevations of the Tetons have received around 18 to 24 inches of snow during this time period. Southwesterly to northerly ridgetop winds have accompanied this snowfall, and dense wind slabs with depths of one to two feet have formed in leeward terrain above 9,000 feet. Skiers and riders could trigger these slabs on steep, avalanche prone slopes. This hazard is likely more pronounced above 10,500 feet. Warming temperatures and periods of sunshine will make these slabs more susceptible to failure as the day progresses.

Expect partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies on Saturday as northerly flow aloft develops. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the mid-teens before rising to near 30 during the day. Tonight, the valleys will drop to near 20 before climbing into the low 40s in the afternoon. Southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds will range from 5 to 15 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate above 9,000 feet on Saturday morning. Temperatures are forecasted to be around five degrees warmer than Friday, and Considerable hazard could develop in the Tetons if mostly sunny skies dominate. In steep, wind loaded avalanche prone terrain, skiers and riders could trigger dense wind slabs with depths of one to two feet. Daytime warming will increase the likelihood of triggering these slabs and also bring about the possibility of shallow wet loose slides. Significant avalanche activity is unlikely below 9,000 feet. Get an early start, monitor warming conditions and solar input, and be willing to alter your travel plans if conditions warrant.
