In sintesi

Backcountry skiers and riders have the potential to initiate avalanches in steep terrain on a variety of aspects today, Natural activity is unlikely, however the weight of a single person has the potential to trigger slabs that could involve wind loaded pockets of recently fallen snow and could involve deeper layers that rest on weak faceted snow. Careful evaluation of the snowpack and its relation to specific terrain features is recommended for safe backcountry travel.

    Strong winds that accompanied snowfall earlier in the week formed slabs on a variety of aspects with depths to three feet at higher elevations and to eighteen inches at lower elevations. These slabs have become less sensitive over the last two days but a chance continues to trigger them, particularly in unsupported cliff bands at the higher elevations and very steep wind deposited areas at the lower elevations.

    The chance continues for large to very large avalanches involving old weak snow layers be triggered at the mid and upper elevations with depths of three to five feet. Failure of these layers is hard to predict and may require either a specific weak, shallow spot on the slope to be impacted or a large load such as a group of people.

Avalanche Discussion

A low pressure trough is moving into the Pacific Northwest. Moisture ahead of this trough will move into our area overnight. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a chance for some light snow showers. Temperature inversions will remain in place. Overnight lows will be in the teens. Daytime highs will be in the 20s. Winds will be from the southwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour with higher gusts.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be moderate. Areas of instability exist. Human triggered slab avalanches are possible on steep slopes in areas with poor snowpack structure and/or buried persistent weak layers. These slabs could be one to three feet deep. Evaluate the snowpack and terrain carefully.
