Avalanche Activity

TO for 7/2. Instability during temperature rise. N through E to S aspects above 700m most affected. Cornices! Moderate hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Through the day, as temperatures rise, a brief period of increased instability will affect existing areas of windslab. Steep, sheltered locations such as gullies, coire rims and ridge flanks on mainly North through East to South aspects above 700 metres will be most affected. Cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: A mainly dry night will be followed by some light snow showers during the morning, turning to rain at all levels by midday. The freezing level will be around 500 metres overnight, rising above the summits mid-morning. Moderate West-North-Westerly winds overnight will back South-Westerly by morning and increase in strength to strong by midday. Observed Weather Influences: Early morning snow showers cleared to give a mainly dry day with occasional showers. The freezing level was around 300 metres. Winds were strong West-North-Westerly. ObservedSnowStability: Moderately bonded windslab is continuing to develop on mainly North-East to South-East aspects above 700 metres. These deposits are generally shallow, only gaining significant depth in wind sheltered locations such as gullies and coire rims. More isolated deposits exist on North and South aspects. Fragile cornices are starting to develop. Windward aspects are scoured and stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
