Avalanche Activity

Predominantly favorable conditions

Overall quite favorable conditions prevail, avalanche danger is low. Isolated avalanche prone locations occur on shady, steep ridgeline slopes and behind protruberances, and in transitions from shallow to deep snow above 2400 m, particularly in laterally-skied steep terrain, mostly by large additional loading they can trigger locally. Caution urged near large cornices. Due to daytime warmth and solar radiation, glide-snow avalanches are possible, especially below 2200 m on steep sunny slopes.

Snowpack Structure

It wasn’t quite as cold last night as in previous nights but the outgoing longwave radiation was still good, due to cloudless skies. Thus, the south-facing slopes formed a crust capable of bearing loads, on SE and SW slopes often not capable. On NE/N/NW slopes there is still loose snow. Above 2200m on north-facing slopes the snowpack is expansively metamorphosed (faceted). Near ridges on very steep slopes and in transitions from shallow to deep snow above 2400 m on W/N/E facing sleops there are isolated weak layers embedded inside the snowpack which are prone to triggering. Below 2000 m the snowpack is partially moist, which enhances the gliding movement of the entire snowpack over very steep grass-covered slopes.

Weather Synopsis

No change, slightly higher temperatures in the mountains. The day will again be sunny, only thin cirrus clouds, winds no impediment. At 2000 m: -9 degrees in early morning, -4 degrees later on. Moderate easterly winds at high altitude.

Tendency

The weather forecast foresees sunny weather continuing until Saturday. Starting on Wednesday afternoon, temperatures are expected to gradually rise. Avalanche danger will contnue to remain low.
