In sintesi

Dangerous avalanche conditions on Tuesday will require that you keep a margin of terrain between you and slopes steeper than 35 degrees. You can trigger avalanches where you find cohesive new snow and where the wind drifts snow at upper elevations. Warning signs of the avalanche danger include whumphing collapses, drifts of freshly blown snow, and a layer of weak, sugar-like snow over a crust about 10-20" below the surface.

    Avoid upper elevation slopes steeper than 35 degrees where you find the wind forming fresh drifts and deeper areas of snow on the leeward side of ridges. Tuesday is a day to avoid wind loaded terrain. If triggered, any slope could break into older weak layers resulting in a more dangerous and surprising avalanche.  The most dangerous slopes will be above treeline where the wind drifts thicker slabs on an already weak snowpack. Pay attention to which slopes receive wind loading and the direction of the wind. Watch for blowing snow as an indicator.

    Moderate winds will increase and shift from south to west through the day. Expect avalanches to be larger at higher slopes and to grow bigger as the day goes on.

    Watch for triggering avalanches in storm snow on slopes steeper than 35 degrees where you find recent cohesive slabs. Take time to assess the new snow before venturing into avalanche terrain. Expect 4-6" of snow through the day. Use extra caution if you find a reactive layer of weak facets sitting over a crust about 1 foot below the surface. Triggering any slope today has the potential to result in a dangerous and surprising avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

A thick freezing rain crust from December 9th can be found below 5,000ft, and east of the hairpin on Hwy 20, but not west of the there. Much of the overlying snow is soft and weak, which could make for a slippery weak layer if more snow is piled on top. Take time to dig in the upper 2 feet of the snow, look for weak sugar-like facets over the crust, and use snowpack tests to look for indicators that you could be dealing with Persistent Slab avalanche conditions like those to the south.

The snowpack remains shallow at lower elevations, and early season hazards such as downed trees, rocks and creeks are plentiful. At lower elevations and steep slopes, dust on crust conditions may make for icy and/or tricky travel.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources. Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
