Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will continue to thaw in all locations. Instability\'s will persist within deeper accumulations found predominately on West through North to North-East aspects above 800 metres. Isolated areas also will also be on South-East and East aspects and at lower altitudes. Greatest hazard will be found on steep terrain such as scarp slopes, gullies and steep burn lines. Many of these areas have cornices above them which will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The thaw continues with the freezing level well above the summits and occasional rain. Winds backing from the West to become fresh South-South-Westerlies for most of the day. Observed Weather Influences: Precipitation fell as snow overnight above 500 metres before turning to rain. The freezing level was around 900 metres by midday. Winds veered and strengthen throughout the day becoming gale force West-South-Westerlies this afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: As the freezing level rose and falling snow turned to rain the snowpack started to thaw. By lunchtime the old snow-ice had started to soften with recent snowfall becoming soft and moist. Weaknesses persist within deeper accumulations mainly on West through North to North-East aspects above 900 metres. Cornices will be prone to collapse above these locations. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
