Togwotee Pass

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE. New snow and strong winds have formed surface slabs in steep wind loaded slopes that may reach depths of one foot as snow continues today. Backcountry riders and skiers could trigger pockets of these slabs. A slight potential also remains for deeper hard slabs to be triggered on very steep slopes and in cliff areas.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Monday night the Tetons will receive periods of snow with accumulations to 5 inches by dawn Tuesday. Winds will be southwesterly overnight increasing from 25 to 40 mile per hour averages then veer to westerly and slow slightly during the day Tuesday. Snow will continue through the day with totals by Tuesday night in the six to twelve inch range. Temperatures will be in the single digits by Tuesday morning then climb into the upper teens. The Greys River area is forecasted to receive four inches of snow by Tuesday afternoon and the Togwotee Pass area four to six inches. Snow and strong winds will develop easily triggered soft surface slabs at upper elevations in the Tetons. Slab depths will increase during the day with the hazard approaching Considerable by evening. The Greys river area will receive less snow and the hazard is forecasted to be Moderate with a chance of triggering surface slabs to a foot in depth on steep, lee slopes. The Togwotee Pass area will begin the day at Low hazard and possibly reach the Moderate level with significant snow and wind.
