Avalanche Summary

You are most likely to trigger an avalanche where winds drift slabs of stiff snow over buried weak layers. The slopes you will most likely trigger an avalanche have rounded pillows of firm snow. The avalanche you trigger in the surface snow could be large enough to bury you but there is the scary potential it could fracture weak layers buried two to three feet deep. Multiple sets of tracks on a slope do not mean it is safe, and you could trigger an avalanche from below or at a distance. Shallow terrain with lots of trigger points are the slopes where you are most likely to trigger a deeper avalanche. You can find safer riding on slopes sheltered from the wind without a slab or on lower-angle slopes.
