Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger.

As a consequence of a moderate to strong wind from northerly directions, wind slabs formed on Wednesday in particular adjacent to ridgelines. They can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases in particular on very steep shady slopes above approximately 2400 m. These places are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. Several medium-sized and large dry and wet avalanches have been released on Monday. The weather conditions facilitated a gradual strengthening of the near-surface layers.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 20 cm of snow will fall in the evening above approximately 1300 m. The wind has transported some snow. Large wind slabs formed. A lot of snow is lying at intermediate and high altitudes. As a consequence of solar radiation a crust formed on the surface during the last few days, in particular on sunny slopes. Over a wide area over a wide area 70 to 160 cm of snow fell on Sunday above approximately 1800 m.

Tendency

New snow: The avalanche danger will increase during the day.
