Heavy snowfall and drifting rapidly increase the avalanche danger. You can trigger an avalanche on slopes where you find more than 8 inches of snow that is poorly bonded to the firm surface below and avalanches may release naturally. Avoid steep slopes where you see cracking and collapsing in the surface snow. If you trigger an avalanche at the surface, it could step down to deeper weak layers. You can find safer travel on slopes without drifting or on low-angle slopes.
