In sintesi

A high impact storm will rapidly increase the avalanche hazard at all elevations. New wind slabs will form on slick old snow surfaces and are likely to be easily triggered by humans and release spontaneously. These slabs could step down to deeper layers of weak persistent snow in areas with poor snowpack structure. Monitor conditions closely and expect dangerous conditons to rapidly develop during the afternoon.

    Strong west winds and new snow will create surface slabs that will gain depth and volume as the day progresses. These slabs are expected to increase to depths of two feet at the mid and upper elevations and to depths of a foot at the lower elevations. They will be forming on very slick old snow surfaces and are likely to be easliy triggered by humans. Natural releases are likely.

    Todays new snow and wind will rapidly load weak layers that persist deep within the snowpack. Large slab avalanches with depths of four to six feet could be triggered by humans or relase naturally on these layers during the afternoon.

Avalanche Discussion

Snowfall rates exceeding an inch per hour are expected to continue through this evening. After a brief letup Thursday morning, another round of moisture may impact the region through the rest of the day. Strong westerly ridgetop winds will range from 25 to 35 miles per hour. Temperatures will decrease overnight with mountain lows in the mid to upper teens. These temperatures are not expected to rise significantly during the day.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be HIGH on Thursday. Backcountry travelers are very likely to trigger newly developed, dense wind slabs one to three feet in depth in leeward starting zones. Below the new slabs, the snowpack structure is poor and the additional load to the preexisting weak layers will increase the likelihood of triggering slides deep within the snowpack. Natural activity for both the new wind slabs and the deep persistent slabs is likely and TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED.
