You can trigger a large and dangerous avalanche that breaks near the ground on northerly and easterly-facing slopes. You can trigger these avalanches from the bottom of a slope or from a distance away. The slides may break wider and run farther than you anticipate. On all other slopes, be on the lookout for where you find more than eight inches of snow. You found a problematic slope if you feel the snow sinking beneath you or see cracking and collapsing on these slopes. Choose slopes less than about 30 degrees in steepness for safer options, but avoid low-angle slopes with steep slopes above.
