At the upper elevations, a few inches of new snow driven by strong westerly ridgetop winds have formed isolated pockets of very shallow wind slab. The chance for skiers and riders to trigger these slides in steep, wind loaded terrain will increase with daytime warming and sunshine. The new snow, which will slow the warming of the older snow surfaces, may also release as shallow, wet loose sluffs later in the day. At all elevations, take note if old snow surfaces can no longer support the weight of backcountry travelers; this will be an indicator that deeper wet slides are becoming possible.

The axis of the weak ridge overhead will move east overnight in advance of the next storm system that will move quickly into Western Wyoming on Wednesday afternoon and evening. This system will bring a quick shot of light mountain snowfall with accumulations of three to five inches at the higher elevations and rain or a mix of rain and snow at the lower elevations.On Wednesday, expect increasing clouds with light snowfall developing in the mountains and rain and snow showers in the valleys by afternoon. Temperatures will rise into the 30s in the mountains and into the upper 40s at the lower elevations. Winds will be southwesterly at 20 miles per hour with higher gusts.The general avalanche hazard is expected to LOW. Warm temperatures and repeated melt-freeze cycles have settled and consolidated the snowpack. Avalanches are unlikely except in isolated pockets.
