In sintesi

You could trigger freshly formed slabs of wind-drifted snow—these slabs often form near or below ridgelines. The likelihood of triggering one of these slides will increase as you climb in elevation and may exist in isolated terrain at middle elevations. As temperatures warm today, steer clear of very steep slopes where you encounter wet, mushy snow. Cornices are large and may be unstable—give them a wide berth.

    Expect freshly formed slabs of wind-drifted snow on steep, exposed slopes at upper elevations. These slabs will trend more stubborn as time passes but remain possible to trigger. The likelihood of triggering one of these sides will increase where you find a thicker, stiffer slab of snow—most likely near ridgelines, alpine bowls, and gullies. Wind-drifted snow will feel stiff and may keep you on the surface. Watch for dunes, drifts, and snow pillows, and listen for hollow, drum-like-sounding surfaces. Cracks shooting out before you are a clear sign you've found a wind slab.

    This avalanche was remotely triggered by a snowmobile yesterday in Mosquito Creek and is a good example of terrain where deeper avalanches involving older wind slabs are possible. NE aspect at 9,100'.  The avalanche failed on old snow around 2-3 feet deep.

    The potential for triggering a wet avalanche will increase as temperatures warm throughout the day. These avalanches are likely to be small and initiated by your sled track or skis crossing a very steep middle or low-elevation slope. This problem will increase in size, location (i.e., more areas across the compass), and natural avalanche potential throughout the week as temperatures and direct sunshine increase. For today, it will be good to start putting wet snow on your radar and avoid very steep slopes if you are sinking into wet, mushy snow.
